The New Forest Pony Association Inc. & Registry was established in 1989 by Co-Founders Lucille Guilbault & Jody Waltz, and is the only licensed and recognized registry in North America. In 1992, the NFPA expanded it's responsibilities and commitment to the breed by becoming a fully operational Registry for New Forest ponies residing in the US and Canada.

Registration Information

On payment of the appropriate fee, as prescribed from time to time by the Board of Directors, the owner of a pony eligible for registration shall have such pony recorded in the Association's Stud Book.

The Board of Directors shall have the right to cancel the registration of any pony registered in the Association's Stud Book if it is satisfied that after entry or transfer, the entry was authorized as a result of a misstatement by the owner, or any person acting on the owner's behalf, or fails to comply with the conditions of registration. The name of a pony in the New Forest Pony Association's Stud Book shall not be changed after entry. A registration certificate is only valid if it is in the correct owner's name.

Requirements for Registration

A pony is eligible for registration in the New Forest Pony Association, Inc. Stud Book if the sire and dam has been registered and licensed with the NFPA or any other recognized New Forest Pony registry or stud book, provided that in all cases, the pony is neither: piebald or skewbald (for the purposes of registration, a pony shall not have white markings over pink skin above the knees or hocks or behind the head, unless they are acquired from scars) or blue-eyed cream. After 1990, dark-eyed palominos with light manes and tails and very light chestnuts are only eligible as mares or as geldings. No New Forest Pony shall exceed 14.2hh (147 cm).

No foal can be registered unless the sire has been registered and licensed before the mare was covered. Licensing inspections will normally be done at two-years-old, along with blood-typing at this time. A second inspection is required at or before May 1st in the stallion's fifth year, except in exceptional circumstances when the decision of the Board of Directors shall be final. Inspection forms and blood typing kits may be obtained from the NFPA, Inc. Secretary. Stallion Licenses and Veterinary Certificates issued by the New Forest Pony Breeding & Cattle Society shall be honored by the Association.

The NFPA Registry established different sections:

Section A - New Registrations for that year, US born Ponies only.

Section B - Re-entries of NFP previously registered and recognized outside New Forest Pony Stud Books.

Section C - For the crossbred New Forest pony that has one parent purebred New Forest.

Section F- Foreign Ponies from Canada only.

Section G - Ponies with more than 6.5% Golden Wonder Blood.

All applications for Registration must be open to inspection and/or blood typing. Artificial Insemination (A.I.) is allowed by the New Forest Pony Association, Inc. & Registry. Embryo Transfer remains prohibited at the present time.

Prefixes

The Association shall compile and maintain a list of Prefixes to be used in conjunction with the names of ponies included in the Stud Book. A Prefix shall be included with the name of the pony when the pony has been bred by the holder of the Prefix or when the pony's dam was in foal at the time of purchase by the holder of the Prefix. Prefixes should NOT be used following the pony's name with the addition of the word of, i.e. Pony's Name of Prefix

On payment of the appropriate fee, any member may register a Prefix that is not already registered with either the NFPA, Inc. and/or the British Central Prefix Register. Prefixes listed in Volume I of the NFPA Stud Book are not necessarily recognized by the British Central Prefix Register nor does registering a prefix with the NFPA, Inc. automatically confer registration within the BCPR.

Registration Fees

The fee for registering a New Forest Pony in the NFPA Stud Book is $30 for members, $40 for non-members. A $10 late fee will be assessed for registration of foals after 6 months from birth. Change of ownership/transfers is $20. Registration of prefix is $10. Membership in the New Forest Pony Association is not a requirement for registration.
